What’s the difference between Barge Cement Vs Contact Cement?

Both can be used to repair shoes. Contact Cement is better for porous materials and offers a longer open time but takes longer to reach full strength.

My Hands-on Test: Barge Infinity Cement

Barge Infinity Cement
The versatility of Barge Infinity Cement is one of the reasons I love it.
Any craft project can be done with it, whether it’s leather, foam, or shoes.
So far, it’s exceeded my expectations when it comes to repairing sneakers.

✅Pros: Barge Cement

I had a pair of $200 Nike Air Max that got damaged in the washer. The bottom sole was almost completely peeled off during the rinse cycle with hot water (remember to use cold water only!). But thanks to this cement, I was able to put it back together, and now they look as good as new.

Applying Barge Cement

shoe repair with Barge Cement

The application process is simple. Just wipe a thin layer of the cement on two surfaces, let them dry for several minutes, and then press them together. The bond is excellent, but it’s essential to pay close attention to the drying time before mating the pieces. When they just cloud over and don’t look “shiny” anymore, that’s the perfect time to squish them together.

Barge Cement vs. Shoe Goo

The main difference between Barge Cement vs. Shoe Goo is: For durability choose Barge Cement, and for flexibility opt for Shoe Goo.

When using Shoe Goo, it’s important to note that it dries quickly, so it’s essential to have everything ready for clamping before application. I prefer using throwaway “acid brushes” for application, as they can’t be reused. After use, I make sure to clean the cap area of the tube with a paper towel.

Adhesive Properties

This cement is incredibly strong when it comes to its adhesive properties. My shoes, for example, were successfully glued together. However, it didn’t stick as well to plastic surfaces, like a door panel, unless you applied pressure.

Quality

However, I must admit that the quality of this cement is great. My sneakers look brand new again, and I couldn’t be more pleased. Anybody looking to repair or customize their sneakers should check this out. This is a must-have for sneaker enthusiasts or DIYers.

❌Cons

I must mention that this cement does have a slight smell upon application, despite being labeled as “No VOCs.” However, the smell dissipates quickly, especially if you’re working in a well-ventilated area. It’s always a good idea to wear a respirator and goggles for added safety.

I wouldn't suggest using it for that purpose. It lacks precise control over the amount used. I would recommend a hot glue gun, super glue, or even fabric glue instead. https://www.stickyaides.com/b/g-s-hypo-cement/.

My Hands-on Test: Contact Cement

DAP Weldwood Original Contact Cement
Contact Cemente is what I use for my projects, usually on the bottoms of tables with cork pads.
It’s easy to use and always holds up well.
It’s not cheap, but it’s there when you need it.
Thanks to the metal container, it lasts longer than glass bottles.
Because of the metal cap, the glue doesn’t dry out and lasts longer.

✅Pros: Weldwood Contact Cement

For those of us who live in a humid climate, where car upholstery separating from the ‘host panel’ is a common problem, I found this product to be superior in bonding the plastic to the vinyl.

Vinyl Covering

I have an amplifier, and the overlapping seam of the vinyl covering came loose. I went to YouTube to see what others have done, and after considering several options, I found this one to be the best. Following the directions on the bottle, I applied the glue, and poof! My repair was literally perfect. No fuss, no muss! I can’t express how thrilled I was with the results.

Permanently Affix

If you ever need to permanently affix something to another object, this is the glue you want to buy. It’s as simple as brushing the cement onto the surface you want to stick and then applying it to the item you want to adhere.

After waiting for about 3-5 minutes, you can place it exactly where you want it. You’ll have around half a second to make any adjustments before it becomes permanently stuck. If you’re using it on something like a guitar case, I recommend clamping it overnight to ensure it stays in place.

❌Cons: Weldwood Contact Cement

I gave it only four stars because the product has a tendency to dry out once it is opened and it has a tendency to get everywhere. However, with careful use and planning, I was able to recreate the professional look before the leather started peeling away from the door panels. Despite the minor drawbacks, I would recommend this product, especially considering its price.

FAQ: Weldwood Contact Cement

Q: Can I affix a stone coaster to a cork board for display purposes?

A: Absolutely! Contact Cement will yield excellent results. Ensure that you apply adhesive to both the stone coaster and the cork board.

Q: Will Contact Cement be suitable for bonding leather to foam in an automotive seat cover?

A: Certainly! However, it is advisable to include an additional mechanical fastener to prevent the joint from peeling at its ends, as is often the case with adhesive bonds.

Q: Can I use Contact Cement to glue corks onto a clarinet?

A: I am confident that it will work effectively. In my experience, I have yet to come across a crafting application where it fails to bond.

Q: Is Contact Cement suitable for cold surfaces? I have a loose freezer gasket and previously used double-sided tape, which lasted a year. I’m considering this as a potentially better option.

A: Yes, Contact Cement will indeed be effective on cold surfaces. Just make sure to carefully follow the provided instructions for optimal results.
