I also used it to glue automotive interior plastic (polypropylene) to itself, and the bond was rock solid. In comparison, when I used JB Weld for plastic on the other side (does jb weld work on plastic
), it adhered for only about five days before popping off cleanly. The residual JB Weld peeled off easily, proving its lack of adhesion. The 3M DP8005, on the other hand, surpassed my expectations with its strength and durability.
Bond a large HDPE sheet
One particular use case where DP8005 proved its worth was when I needed to bond a large HDPE sheet to a frame for an outdoor grill prep station.
That was a whopping two years ago, and I’m thrilled to report that it’s still holding strong. I had tried various adhesives before stumbling upon this gem, but nothing seemed to work until I discovered this adhesive. It was the only thing that could tackle the job.
Surface-weld Low-energy Plastics
Another noteworthy aspect of this adhesive is its exceptional ability to surface-weld low-energy plastics, such as gas cans and other highly resistant materials. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution during the curing process. If excessive adhesive is applied, it can curdle up.
Fix the Delamination on the Kayak Bottom
Another impressive feat of this adhesive is its ability to fix the delamination on the bottom of my kayak. Due to some misuse, the hull had started to delaminate, and finding a suitable solution was challenging. However, this adhesive came to the rescue, and now my kayak is as good as new. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

A: Hi there! There is a small chance that it could work. It’s crucial to have the correct equipment for the DP8005, as it requires a 10:1 ratio mix. Additionally, please note that while the adhesive is resistant to chemicals and heat once cured, its primary purpose is to bond two overlapping substrates in industrial applications, rather than filling cracks or holes. A: In short, yes. The gray plastic EPX 3M applicator can dispense both the 45ml and 50ml sizes (the plungers are interchangeable). However, it is crucial to ensure that your 3M dispenser setup includes the current 10:1-45ml plunger, which comes as standard with gray EPX applicators manufactured in fall 2018 or later. The other plunger that comes as standard is designed for 48 or 50ml cartridges with a ratio of 1:1 or 2:1.
Q: Can this adhesive bond to ABS or Schedule 80 plastics?
A: ABS, definitely. For many years, 3M has recommended using either DP8005 or DP8010 to achieve structural bonding with rigid PVC, with shear strength of 1000 PSI or higher. These adhesives are meant to bond “all” blends of rigid PVC, including Schedule 40 and 80.
Q: Will DP8005 create a watertight seal between a cap and a corrugated plastic pipe? Both the pipe and cap are made of HDPE.
A: I’m confident that it would. I have successfully bonded two pieces of HDPE together on the transom of boats.

My Hands-on Test: DP8010

The bond it creates feels like it’s part of the original surface, giving me a lot of confidence that it will outlast the original material. It’s definitely worth the price to avoid the inevitable headaches that come with the “I hope it works” approach.
Repair a Polyethylene Water Tank
I also used DP8010 to repair a polyethylene water tank on my boat, and let me tell you, the bond it creates is fantastic! It’s super strong and has held up well. In fact, I’ve even used it for other gluing applications, and it has performed admirably. Yes, it’s not cheap, and you do need a new applicator tip with each use, but as they say, you get what you pay for.
Stick Some Tefzel Plastic Brackets
Now, let’s talk about a unique challenge I faced with DP8010. I wanted to stick some Tefzel plastic brackets to the side of a gearbox that runs at around 115 degrees Celsius. Tefzel is the chemical name for Teflon, so you can imagine the difficulty in sticking Teflon to something that has a surface temperature hotter than boiling water. But guess what? DP8010 came through! It held the brackets securely, and I could even hang 10lbs off them without any issues.
HDPE Surface
To use DP8010, I cleaned the HDPE surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. I hastened the curing process a little with a heater and then let it sit for 48 hours before pressurizing. The ambient temperature during the curing process was about 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it was cured, the adhesive became as hard as tire rubber.
❌Cons: DP8010
There are a couple of drawbacks. It takes about 4-6 minutes to set, even when the surface is already at 115 degrees Celsius. So, for vertical surfaces, you need to mechanically hold it in place while it sets. The other drawback is the cost. Holy mackerel, this stuff is expensive! But for a one-off application like mine, it made sense to invest in it.

Q: Can I use DP8010 on a polyethylene Kayak with a 6-inch crack on the top?
A: DP8010 will effectively repair the crack on your polyethylene Kayak. To ensure a strong bond, I recommend placing a patch of rigid plastic behind the crack before applying the epoxy. Avoid using a flexible material as it may cause issues. Once cured, the epoxy might leave a rough residue that can be sanded down.
Q: Is DP8010 suitable for bonding aluminum to HDPE for underwater applications? If not, which product would you suggest?
A: While I cannot provide a direct answer to your question, I have used DP8010 successfully for bonding HDPE to HDPE. To be sure, I suggest mixing a small amount of the adhesive and conducting a test bond. Prior to bonding, make sure to thoroughly degrease both materials and roughen their surfaces using coarse sandpaper.
