The directions for polyurethane glue state that the wood needs to have a moisture content of 8 percent or more for the glue to work. How am I supposed to determine that without a moisture meter?
Sticky Aides Your Guide to Adhesives, Glue, and Beyond
When using polyurethane adhesives, it’s important to ensure there is enough moisture present for the glue to set and harden correctly.
As a precautionary measure, it’s recommended to lightly moisten either one or both of the surfaces being glued together using a slightly damp cloth. If the wood changes color and becomes slightly darker, that indicates sufficient dampness.
After moistening, apply the polyurethane glue and join the pieces together. This same technique should be employed when working with engineered wood products like MDF or plywood, as they often have low moisture content which may not be enough for the glue to cure optimally.
