What are the basic steps for gluing up and clamping a large panel?

1 review

  • After completing the necessary preparation and dry-fitting steps, the basic procedure for gluing the boards together is as follows:

    • Apply a thin layer of wood glue to both edges of all the boards, except for the two outermost edges.
    • Position the boards on top of evenly spaced bar clamps. To prevent any upward or downward curvature, ensure that the pressure points of the clamp jaws are aligned with the centers of the boards. Use wood strips to prop up the boards to the level of the “center of the jaws.”
    • Gently tighten one clamp, then move along the line and lightly tighten the others. Use your fingertips to feel the joints and adjust the boards up or down until they are flush. Once all the boards are flush, tighten each clamp securely. Install alternating top clamps for better clamping power.
    • Allow the glued panel to sit flat on your workbench or stand it vertically until the glue has fully dried.

By following these steps, you can ensure proper alignment, even pressure distribution, and adequate clamping force, resulting in a well-glued and flat panel assembly.
