When working with yellow and white glue, what’s the difference between open time, clamping time, and curing time?
Open time is how much working time you have between spreading the glue and getting the pieces positioned and clamped.
For most carpenter glues, this is 5 to 10 minutes. The problem with leaving glue “open” for too long is that it skins over, resulting in a weaker bond.
Clamping time is how long you should leave the clamps in place. For most woodworking glues, this is about an hour.
Curing time is how long it takes for a glue to reach full strength. For wood glues, this is about 24 hours.
