Goof Off Vs Acetone: Remove Paint On the Floor, Clean Wood After Sanding

Last updated on March 21, 2024 / Reviewed by Ronald, a šŸŽ–ļø10-year Adhesive Industry Veteran  @stickyaides in šŸŒ‰San Francisco

What’s the difference between Goof Off and Acetone?

Acetone is gentler on hard floors than Goof off. When it comes to hardwood floors, Goof Off can be a bit tricky. There are some lines where I first applied the paint thinner. Even after using a paintbrush to even it out, there were still some squiggly lines. The important thing to note is that I only had it on the floor for about 60 seconds.

Pure Anhydrous Acetone: ACS Grade acetone with a water content of 1% or less.
Removing Nail Glue: can effectively dissolve and remove nail glue. Whether you have leftover glue from artificial nails (see my article here ) or adhesive residue from nail art, applying acetone will help you get rid of the sticky residue easily.

Cleaning Bearings and Other Surfaces: While primarily designed for nail polish removal, this product can also be used for cleaning various surfaces, such as bearings.

Removing Ink Marks: If you accidentally get permanent marker ink on surfaces like books or other materials, this product can be used to remove the marks.

Removing Super Glue: When you encounter situations where super glue has bonded surfaces unintentionally, this product can come to the rescue.

My Hands-on Test: Acetone

anhydrous acetone
Anyone who’s painted knows how important it is to keep your paintbrush clean.
It can be time consuming and damaging to expensive brushes to clean them multiple times a day with mineral spirits or acetone.
That’s why I love this product—it’s made my life so much easier.

āœ…Pros: Acetone

In just a few minutes, it created a strong bond and fixed a toy yo-yo. Although I could’ve bought a new yo-yo for less, seeing my son’s joy at having his broken toy fixed was worth it. This product will also work on plastics that aren’t compatible with regular glue and epoxy.

Use Acetone to Remove Paint On the Floor

I’m getting a bit of paint on the floors. This happens to be vinyl but it works on any type of floor tile wood, so we’re going to use acetone first to spray the area then we’re going to take a cloth preferably microfiber and we’re just going to wipe it all the way.

use Acetone to remove paint on the floor

Acetone is super easy and there’s barely any elbow grease. It just comes off like it was never there. It looks super great; the smell is a little bit nut but other than that it goes away with a little bit of time and spraying just one more time because there’s a little bit of paint left over.

Look how easy that was! The best part about acetone is that once it’s on the cloth and you’ve got more areas you can just go ahead and use the cloth and it’ll take off those extra spots.

Acetone to Clean Wood After Sanding

Here’s a demonstration of cleaning off the sanding dust with acetone:

Acetone to Clean Wood After Sanding

High Purity

There were no issues with dilution. It appeared to be truly anhydrous, which was a relief. I primarily use acetone for cleaning laser optics, and this particular brand has done an excellent job in that regard. The purity of the acetone seems to be very high.

Bottle Design

Anhydrous Acetone Explained

The bottle design of this acetone is inconspicuous. The bottle is sealed so it doesn’t attract too much attention. It’s super handy since my lady has taken my nail care products without asking.

Removing Gel Nails

This acetone isn’t just great for laser optics, it’s also great for removing gel nails. There haven’t been any nail salons open due to the pandemic, which is annoying for my wife. However, this acetone worked great for her at-home gel nail removal. She really appreciated it during quarantine.

It effortlessly soaks off acrylic nails and gel nail polish in about two hours. It’s also highly effective at removing gel polish from toes. This makes it a perfect companion during quarantine time when nail salons are closed.

āŒCons: Acetone

Speaking of the product itself, I did notice a strong acetone smell even before I opened the box. I had read a similar review mentioning this issue, and I had hoped that it would have been addressed by the time I made my purchase. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

Will Goof Off Damage Car Paint

Simply grab a microfiber cloth and use this goof off to effortlessly remove sticky tree juice from your hands. It’s also great for tackling overspray on decking.

I taped off the area around the posts and protected it with paper, but some overspray still ended up there. However, with this Goof Off Pro Strength remover, it came right off, even from the nooks and crannies.

āŒCons

In my experience, hardwood floors can be tricky. I tried it on my floors, and unfortunately, it left some lines where I originally applied the paint thinner. You could still see some squiggly lines after evening it out with a paintbrush. Just so you know, I only had it on the floor for about 60 seconds before I tried to fix it. This stuff works fast, but you have to be careful since it lifts everything up, not just paint.
