What’s the difference between Permatex Cold Weld vs. JB Weld?
Permatex Cold Weld vs. JB Weld: Specs & Uses
Here is the info:
Permatex Cold Weld Review
✅Permatex Cold Weld Directions
Permatex Cold Weld makes incredibly strong bonds once fully cured, which is what I like most about it. You might have to wait longer than the claimed 8 minute setting time (I recommend waiting at least 30 minutes before handling the repaired item or letting it cure overnight for optimal results), but the end result is worth it.
Cracked Coolant Passage
The coolant passage was cracked, so I fixed it myself. Broke out the TIG welder and carefully laid down a solid bead to seal it up tight. For a little extra peace of mind, I also smeared on a touch of Permatex cold weld around the freshly welded area. It’s a darn good thing I had the foresight to dig into the motor while it was already torn out for the transmission overhaul.
If I hadn’t been so meticulous, I might’ve thrown everything back together only to find myself chasing down a pesky coolant leak later on. Gotta pat myself on the back for being thorough and catching that crack before it came back to bite me in the ass.
Versatility
What I love about this product is its versatility. It’s not just limited to automotive repairs; I’ve used it for household fixes as well, such as sealing rust holes on my lawnmower and repairing a leaky aluminum car rim. The easy-to-follow instructions make it accessible for DIY enthusiasts of all skill levels, and the solid bond it creates gives me confidence in the longevity of my repairs.
How to Use Permatex Cold Weld?
- Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from any contaminants like grease or dirt. When working with plastics, use isopropyl alcohol. To enhance bond strength, roughen the area to be bonded using coarse sandpaper or a wire brush before applying the product.
- Dispense equal amounts of the weld agent and hardening agent, and mix them thoroughly until a uniform color is achieved.
- Apply the mixture to the surface being repaired, and immediately remove any excess material.
- Permatex Cold Weld will set in 8 minutes. Allow the repaired part(s) to cure for 16 hours (or overnight) before putting them back into service.
Is Permatex Cold Weld Resistant to Gasoline?
Yes, it is resistant to most shop fluids including fuels, oil, water, and solvents.
❌Permatex Cold Weld Instructions: Cons
Can Permatex cold weld be used on plastic?
Permatex Cold Weld On Plastic
It retains effective properties when in contact with water, oil, fuels, and most solvents. Not recommended for long-term exposure to chemicals and solvents. It will not bond with polyethylene and polypropylene plastics.

My Hands-on Test: JB Weld
✅Pros: JB Weld
The product is amazing when I need to join metal parts or fill holes in metals. Although the name “weld” suggests another process, I’ve found that JB-Weld can sometimes handle tasks that traditional welding can’t.

Does Jb Weld Work On Aluminum?
Yes, JB Weld can work on aluminum. However, for optimal results, ensure the aluminum surface is thoroughly cleaned, degreased, and roughened before applying the epoxy.
↑Piece of stud plate for the solar mounting, all aluminum bolts washers and acorn nuts, counter sunk and jb welded, I’m extremely impressed with the bond.
Is Jb Weld Conductive?
No, JB Weld is not electrically conductive once it has fully cured. It can be used as an insulator in electrical applications. I saw a video on YouTube where a guy made a cylinder head out of jb weld, and it did not ground the spark plug.
Will Jb Weld Work On Plastic?
JB Weld can work on some plastics, but it is generally not the best choice for bonding plastic materials. For plastic repairs, it is recommended to use an epoxy or adhesive specifically designed for plastics.
How to Get Jb Weld Off Skin?
If JB Weld gets on your skin, try to remove it as quickly as possible before it dries. Use a cloth or paper towel to wipe off the excess, then wash the area with soap and warm water. If the epoxy has already dried, you can try using a pumice stone or fine-grit sandpaper to gently remove it. Avoid using harsh solvents on your skin.
How Long Will Jb Weld Last On Exhaust?
B Weld can withstand high temperatures and is often used for exhaust repairs. When applied correctly, it can last for a considerable time, often several months to a year or more, depending on the severity of the damage and the exhaust’s conditions. However, it is generally considered a temporary fix, and proper welding should be done for a permanent repair.
Can You Paint Jb Weld?
Yes, you can paint over JB Weld once it has fully cured. Sand the surface of the cured epoxy to create a smooth finish and to promote better paint adhesion. Make sure to remove any sanding dust before applying the paint.
↑The control vacuum canister had seen better days! Blasted it clean, repaired pinholes with JB Weld, and painted it in enamel paint.
❌Cons: JB Weld
In my experience, JB-Weld isn’t always the right choice for materials other than metal. For rigid plastics, clear or specialized epoxies like CLEARBOND H-3S can be better suited. And while JB-Weld is excellent, there are times when a quick epoxy is necessary, especially when I need something to set rapidly or when I’m working with items that can’t be easily supported during curing.
What Will Jb Weld Not Stick To?
Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PPE), nylon, highly flexible materials, non-porous surfaces, underwater immersion
Hi Ron. Thanks for your informative comparison. I am actually looking at JB Weld and Permatex Steel Weld Epoxy (25ml). I’m looking to repair a small split around the bolt on a chrome plated rocker/valve cover. I am a little concerned about adhesion to the chrome plating even though I will rough up with sandpaper. Seems this version isn’t resistant to fuel, oil etc so may not be so good…. Darn it all.
